If your future is in genetic counseling, you belong here.

Why join the Advocate Genetics Grad School Prep Program?

1 — Immerse yourself in genetic counseling & knowledge management skills

We want you to maximize your productivity and learning in grad school. It’s not exactly easy to stay up with the constant evolution of genetic medicine, or with the constant information stream that we need to triage. Let us help you set the stage so that you can shine in interviews, and utilize those grad school years most productively to set up your future career.

2 — Gain the edge with a focused curriculum on the reproductive medicine specialty

Get deep exposure to a growing clinical specialty that will impact all of genetic counseling, but which is rarely covered in depth in graduate school—reproductive medicine! We cover all the PGTs (A, M, SR, P), gamete and embryo donation, and the ethics of reproductive technology and reproductive genetics. Be prepared like few other genetic counselors to enter this specialty field, or to help us integrate this clinical knowledge into other specialty areas.

3 — Get engaged with a weekly discussion group led by a genetic counselor & our active interns

Practice engaging in collegial dialogue about current issues in genetic counseling with a small group of peers while getting to know our genetic counseling team and how we approach counseling issues. Start with early, national (or even international!) networking in the genetic counseling community.

4 — Grow your portfolio with a showcase project of your choosing

The showcase project is a self-directed exploration of a topic or media in reproductive genetics through the lens of patients and providers. We hope that this showcase project will extend into something public-facing down the line (blog post/activity/curriculum addition), a personal interest or specialty area, or even a thesis topic down the line! This is meant to give you the freedom to explore a topic and bring the learning back to the group so that we all can learn something through your lens and appreciate your perspective.

5 — Access novel opportunities in shadowing, journal club, and case conference with the Advocate Genetics team

Genetic counseling is best played as a team sport. Get exposure to the inner workings of a virtual genetic counseling practice through shadowing genetic counseling sessions, and getting insight into the critical thinking required of a genetic counseling team at our monthly journal club and case conference.

6 — Build a chosen skill in our internship program

Once you’re done with the GC Prep Course, you’re invited to join our internship program in a special interest group or a project team (as available). Current groups include International Genetic Counseling, Application Prep & Support, Movie & Book Club, Outreach, Newsletter/Blog, Discussion Leaders, and Shadowing Managers. Our interns are helping us to build a better future for pre-GC students and the patients you will eventually help.

7 — Get social with our crew

Okay, we’re genetics nerds, but we’re also people-people. At the heart of Advocate Genetics is a deep understanding of the tension between providing up-to-date, deeply researched genetic information and showing up unhurried and whole, so that true human connection makes difficult decisions easier to make. We want you to be immersed in community and care on your path to becoming a genetic counselor, because you get to show up whole in the world when you’re cared for too! Sprinkled into our program are a dedicated online community and access to our genetic counseling team for mentorship opportunities. . . .because you deserve a community in your corner.

Grad school is supposed to be hard.

But the key is. . . the more you show up as a person, the deeper and more transformative the experience can be for you—and for the patients that you’ll eventually help.

We’re here to put you on the right track.
