My experience as an intern at Advocate Genetics has been nothing but enlightening and positive. Gaining exposure in a growing specialty within genetic counseling and genomic healthcare has allowed me to advance my ability to empathize with families and individuals seeking support within their reproductive healthcare journey. Further, I have gained skills in disseminating complex reproductive genetics topics that I will continue to develop as I become a professional genetic counselor. The genetic counselors at Advocate Genetics really care about exposing interns to the joys and challenges of being a genetic counselor. The internship helped me to feel more connected to and knowledgeable about the genetic counseling community. By completing a "showcase project," I was encouraged to think like a genetic counselor and develop the seed of a potential idea that I could pursue in grad school.

I absolutely loved the experience I gained through Advocate Genetics. In preparation for my graduate school applications to genetic counseling programs, I felt this internship did a great job of confirming that this profession is a perfect fit for me. Through video lessons, discussion groups, and hands on experiences, my understanding of the fertility side of genetic counseling has improved immensely. The Advocate Genetics internship opened my eyes to the world of fertility genetics. Having no experience in the fertility space going in, I have dove into a new set of complexities within genetic counseling that is likely to affect my career path from now on.

Being a part of this internship has not only provided me with more insight into the field of reproductive medicine, but has broadened my perspective on the scope of genetic counseling. I loved hearing new perspectives from my discussion group and having the opportunity to learn and grow with my cohort on our genetic counseling journeys!

This internship has allowed me to grow so much as a prospective genetic counseling student. I am re-applying to graduate school, which is a really difficult experience. Before the internship, I didn't feel qualified or prepared. After the past few months, I feel motivated and excited for my applications as I really do believe that I now have the skills to be an amazing future genetic counselor! I owe this to the internship program at Advocate Genetics! Everyone here really cares about seeing their interns succeed, it is such an amazing community to be part of.

As someone who is unable to access many GC opportunities due to my location, having this virtual opportunity to interact with the GC community and make these bonds is priceless. I truly admire how Advocate works with pre-GC students and crafts different roles to integrate us into their company. It really makes GC more accessible!

The genetic counselors who led us through the internship are so passionate about the field of genetic counseling and about advocating for their patients. In a way, I felt like I was a patient and that they were advocating for me as I try to carve a path toward becoming a genetic counselor. They not only helped me develop a deeper understanding of what it’s like to work in reproductive medicine, but they also helped me build work habits that will serve me well when I become a genetic counselor. They are committed to staying on top of the steady stream of new information, and now I understand how I can do that too. I am grateful for the time, knowledge, and wisdom that they shared with me!

The Advocate Genetics Internship program allowed me to advance my knowledge and passion in and for the field of Genetic Counseling through a hands on learning program. Such a great experience! I learned so much by being a part of this program and it definitely solidified my interest in pursuing Genetic counseling as a career. I met so many great people who really supported me through this program by answering my questions and always encouraging me. The support helped me do my best and push myself through my interest in genetic counseling through my showcase project. I really loved how the discussion sessions were a safe space for everyone to share our ideas and thoughts. It was so beneficial to see and learn from everyone’s perspective and always learning things I had never seen or heard of before. I am so happy I took this prep course.

I have decided to pursue a different field, but have valued the time and experience in this program TREMENDOUSLY! Thank you for such a great opportunity.

The Advocate Genetics prep program informed me on the complex topics genetic counselors educate patients on everyday. Advocate Genetics provides such a unique opportunity for students to dive deep into the reproductive health space. I was exposed to many diverse examples of the genetics issues that arise for patients who are embarking on their reproductive journeys. The prep program introduces you to broad topics in genetic counseling that you can then see in action during consultations. Since completing the prep program, I have been urged and inspired to continue pursuing matching with a genetic counseling program.

The prep program was a fantastic opportunity to be engrossed in preconception genetics. The experience taught me the importance of visual aids, psychosocial elements of sessions and testing options / how they benefit certain populations. Everyone was very open and non judgemental. I learned a lot about myself and developed as a more well rounded individual from the program which I know will help my future patients. I look forward to continuing on this journey as an intern and the growth I will undergo in the coming months.

The advocate genetics prep program was an incredible experience. I was able to learn so much about a field I knew little about. Between weekly discussions, assignments, and a showcase project, I have gained valuable skills that will help me in grad school.

My prep program experience at Advocate Genetics has been fantastic. This program was a great way to learn about a specialty that is not frequently offered in graduate programs. In addition, this program yielded a few mentors that I will be able to lean on in my future endeavors. Advocate also does a fantastic job of allowing for shadowing sessions, which I really enjoyed! Overall, this program was a great experience.

I found the Advocate Genetics Prep program to be a very valuable service. There are lectures to explain this particular discipline in genetic counseling. There are discussion opportunities to reflect on these lectures, ask questions, and hear from your peers' work experience that may have provided them insight on the life of a GC. They are super understanding if you have a big work load and fall behind on lecture material and you are still welcome to attend the discussions to learn what others thought. The discussion questions challenged you to think about the role of a GC and the skills they use day to day or in particular scenarios which I think is SUPER important to be mindful of since GC schools will be looking for this knowledge from you so they are confident in your ability to stay in this field post-graduate school. I LOVED the opportunity to do a showcase project. I personally chose a topic I wanted to learn more about and shared review articles as well as limitations I had in my presentation.
